Batavi Atelier Watch Review: A True Conversation Starter on Your Wrist

Fish scale dial

Introduction

Hello, watch enthusiasts and collectors! Have you ever found yourself in a never-ending quest for that perfect dress watch? Something that doesn't just tell the time but tells a story? Enter the Batavi Atelier. This dress watch from the Dutch brand Batavi is a conversation starter, not just a time-teller. So, why is this watch causing such a stir in the horology community? Let's dive in.

Specifications

What Powers It?

The Atelier is armed with a Japanese Miyota 9039 automatic movement, with a power reserve that won't let you down—up to 44 hours, to be exact. It may not be the prettiest of movements, but this one is reliable and easily serviceable. Besides, in the Atelier’s case, it’s the dial that steals the show!

Build and Quality

Crafted with a stainless steel case and protected by sapphire crystal, this watch is built to last. Dimension-wise, we're looking at a 39mm diameter and 11mm thickness—making it an elegant yet robust piece for your collection. On my just over 7” wrist, I found that short lug to lug really made this one sit on my wrist nicely. It’s neither too big nor too small, and the 11mm thickness gives it a nice profile.

The Wow Factor

But hold on, what really steals the show is its 3D fish scale pattern dial. Yes, you read that right. Fish scales may be a different and interesting way to describe it! And you could imagine petals could easily be as good a description, but whichever way you look at it, it’s a superb-looking dial. The effect they used gives the dial an almost concave effect, sinking into the center where it meets those skeletonised hands. I haven’t seen a dial like this available at anywhere near the price point that Batavi is selling these for, so that’s quite an accomplishment in itself! It's available in three very nice colours: Dune Beige, Aquamarine Blue, and Rock Purple.

Limited Edition Alert!

Don't wait too long. Only 250 pieces of each colour are up for grabs. Priced at €479, it's not just a watch; it's a limited-edition masterpiece. And one, I’m sure that is going to be incredibly popular among watch enthusiasts.

The Experience

I've spent a week wrapped in the charm of the Aquamarine Blue Atelier. The truth? It's not just a watch; it's a statement. Batavi has always had a knack for colour and design, and the Atelier lives up to that legacy. The 3D fish scale pattern adds a level of depth to the dial that you'd usually pay a small fortune for. It’s one that immediately grabs attention on the wrist for all the right reasons, and one I have had a lot of people ask about. People seem genuinely shocked that the price is so competitive for a watch the really does look like it should be far more expensive.

Case details on the Batavi Atelier

The Case and Bracelet

Sturdy and stylish, the case and bracelet show Batavi's dedication to quality. The scalloped detail on the case side is particularly intriguing. Now, while the bracelet is well-made, with a jubilee style and secure clasp, let me tell you—don't overlook the strap options. The dial colours would perfectly complement a luxurious leather strap, turning the aesthetic up another notch. Batavi has a great range of straps for this and their other watches, and they would probably be the way I would go. If anything, I think a strap would highlight that dial even more.

Nitpicking

The numeral application on the underside of the crystal may not be everyone's cup of tea. But in this case, it just works. It adds yet another layer to the dial, creating a sense of depth that's hard to overlook.

Final Thoughts

So, is the Batavi Atelier worth it? Absolutely. It's a well-crafted, stunning watch that comes at a price that leaves you wondering how they managed it. Its limited availability makes it even more desirable. So If you're in the market for a dress watch that breaks the mold, do yourself a favour—check this one out before it sells out.
