Hey there, watch enthusiasts! Today, we're diving into the world of field watches with a spotlight on the Unimatic U2S-T-MP. This watch has been making waves in the community, and for good reason. Combining modern craftsmanship with a vintage military aesthetic, the U2S-T-MP is a limited edition piece that's sure to turn heads. Let's explore what makes this watch so special.
Design and Build Quality
First things first, let’s talk design. The U2S-T-MP features a 38.5mm Grade II titanium case, which is both lightweight and incredibly durable. Titanium is a fantastic choice because it's nearly 45% lighter than stainless steel, making this watch super comfy for everyday wear. The sandblasted finish gives it a rugged yet refined look, perfectly complemented by the warm grey hues and the Blu Notte (night blue) dial.
I absolutely love the packaging Unimatic uses! The Pelican-style protective case is a great addition and really goes with the tool watch style and feel of this watch. The additional strap option provided in the box is a nice touch as well. It's always appreciated when a brand offers these options.
The U2 case shape has always been a favourite of mine, and in titanium, it really shines. The lightness and feel are superb, and titanium always has less of a polished finish than stainless steel, which I appreciate in a tool-styled watch.
Dial and Hands
The dial is a real treat for the eyes. The deep blue colour, paired with white Super-LumiNova® BGW09 markers, glows a cool blue in the dark. The contrast between the deep blue dial and the hands and markers makes this a very legible watch. Thanks to the luminous compound they use, this legibility is maintained even when the sun goes down.
The overall look of the dial is very classy, and I'm glad they kept it simple with minimal text. Above the 6 o’clock position, you'll only find the Unimatic name, "Made in Italy," and the water resistance rating, which is a reassuring 300m.
Movement
Inside the U2S-T-MP, you’ll find the Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement. This powerhouse is known for its reliability and precision, ticking away at 28,800 vibrations per hour (vph) with a 38-hour power reserve. The hacking second-hand is a nice touch, allowing for precise time-setting—perfect for those who like everything just so.
Straps and Wearability
Unimatic didn't skimp on the straps, either. The U2S-T-MP comes with two options: a Blu Notte TPU two-piece strap and a matching nylon seatbelt strap. Both feature titanium sandblasted hardware signed by UNIMATIC, ensuring they are durable and comfortable. The rubber strap is nicely made and features the same titanium as the case for the buckle, with Unimatic proudly etched into it. The strap itself is ribbed and very grippy, almost to the point it’s stiff to get on. I think I’d prefer a softer rubber strap with perhaps a touch more taper to it, but that’s my personal preference. The fact that the case has drilled lugs means changing straps will be a breeze.
Overall, the feeling on my wrist is great despite no downturn to the lugs. The Unimatic wears well with no overhang on my just over 7” wrist.
Performance and Utility
One of the standout features of this watch is its 300-meter water resistance. Whether you're diving or just out in the rain, the U2S-T-MP can handle it. The double-domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal ensures you can read the time in any light, and the 8mm diameter crown ensures a secure, watertight seal. I'm glad they went with a large crown! This one is nicely sized and grippy for ease of use.

Why Field Watches Are So Popular
Field watches are having a moment, and it’s easy to see why. They combine durability, functionality, and timeless design, making them versatile enough for both the great outdoors and city life. Originally designed for military use, these watches are built to withstand harsh conditions while providing reliable timekeeping.
The Unimatic U2S-T-MP fits right into this trend. Its robust titanium case, excellent water resistance, and vintage-inspired design make it a versatile accessory that can handle both adventures and everyday wear. The clean, readable dial and practical features like the hacking second-hand and double-domed sapphire crystal add to its appeal.
Why Choose the U2S-T-MP Over the Standard U2?
When considering the Unimatic U2S-T-MP over the standard U2, there are a few key differences and upgrades to keep in mind:
Material and Weight: The U2S-T-MP features a Grade II titanium case, which is significantly lighter and more durable than the stainless steel used in the standard U2. This makes the U2S-T-MP more comfortable for extended wear.
Limited Edition: The U2S-T-MP is a limited edition with only 500 pieces available. This exclusivity adds to its appeal for collectors and ensures it’s a unique piece.
Design Elements: The U2S-T-MP sports a striking Blu Notte dial and matching straps, giving it a distinct look compared to the standard U2. The titanium sandblasted finish also adds a refined, rugged charm.
Performance: While both models feature excellent water resistance and durable builds, the U2S-T-MP’s lightweight titanium construction makes it slightly more practical for those looking for a robust yet light field watch.
Dive Watch Characteristics
Although I view the U2S-T-MP as a field watch, it also shares many characteristics with dive watches. The impressive 300-meter water resistance and the highly legible dial design are features typically found in dive watches. This crossover appeal adds to the versatility of the U2S-T-MP, making it suitable for both land and underwater adventures.
Conclusion
For my first hands-on experience with the U2, I can say this watch has not disappointed me. I love the fit and finish, and that Italian design and tool watch feel shines through. I enjoy the presentation and packaging Unimatic uses, and I think the U2 overall, even if it’s not a limited edition version, offers solid value for the price. Unimatic is definitely a brand I want to see and experience more from.
The Unimatic U2S-T-MP is more than just a watch. Its lightweight titanium construction, reliable Swiss movement, and impressive water resistance make it a standout in the field watch category. Whether you’re an experienced collector or new to the world of watches, the U2S-T-MP offers a compelling blend of style and functionality.
If you’re on the hunt for a unique, limited-edition field watch, the U2S-T-MP is definitely worth considering. It combines the best of both worlds: a nod to the past with its vintage military design and a step into the future with its modern materials and construction. Happy watch hunting!
