Everyday dress watch on a budget Seiko Presage

I think most people who enjoy watches will need an everyday dress watch in their collection at some point. It may not be a watch you wear regularly, but now and then a dress watch for more formal occasions is an excellent addition to any collection. So in that situation, what do you buy? Well, I was in that situation and decided to look at the Seiko Presage line. Ultimately I went with the SRPB41J1 or The Blue Moon as it’s known.

At 40mm in diameter the case is in the sweet spot for me in terms of size, and with a low profile of 11.8mm thanks to a boxed crystal, it fits under shirt cuffs easily. With a stainless steel construction for both the case and supplied bracelet, you get a beautiful polished finished that suits the everyday dress watch style. This at the time was also the only one of the presage cocktail time watches that came supplied on the bracelet with a push-button deployant clasp. I found this bracelet to be a little awkward to adjust and generally prefer a strap on a watch, but overall the quality of the bracelet was good, and it is nice to have this as an option if I needed it.

The real star of the show, of course, is that dial! Nicknamed the blue moon, it’s a fantastic sunray textured sunburst blue colour. It catches the light across the dial facets in so many ways it always remains mesmerising. You really can see where the designers at Seiko we’re going with the blue moon cocktail theme and for me this was the pick of the line-up. This is one watch that always catches the eye. Numerous people have asked me about this watch and are always fascinated by the dial finish. Complimenting the dial finish the indices and hands are very slim but highly polished to mimic the design and shimmer of cocktail glass stems. Small details like this add to the overall sharpness of the dial design and make it very special to look at.

Underneath that dial, Seiko has used the 4R35 movement with a 41-hour power reserve and manual winding capability. This is visible through the display case back, although there are no real decorations to speak of. At this price point, I always find display case backs a little unnecessary due to the general lack of decoration, but as a dress watch, this decision does make sense and adds another level of detail.

Conclusion

If like me, you wear mainly sports or tool watches but need something a little more dressy from time to time, then this is an exceptional watch. It sits at a price where there aren't many watches as striking in appearance and nicely finished. Seiko offers a range of colours in the cocktail line, so if blue isn’t your colour, there are others to choose from, but these are not supplied on a bracelet so bear that in mind when choosing. I added the strap in these photographs, and I think as an overall package, this Seiko Blue Moon and cocktail line, in general, is tough to beat as an everyday dress watch. With Seiko reliability, you will be staring at that stunning dial for many years to come, and that sounds like a bargain to me!
