In my quest to explore the diverse world of watches, the Spinnaker Fleuss Chronograph caught my eye, particularly the ref SP-5085-11. With its slate grey color and vibrant blue sub-dial details, it's a watch that demands attention. But does it live up to the expectations set by its predecessor, the original Fleuss?

Reflecting on Design and Build

  • Case and Bracelet: The craftsmanship here is evident. The brushed case, polished lugs, and the sturdy bracelet speak volumes about Spinnaker's attention to detail. However, I found the center links on the bracelet slightly lacking in finish, with visible tool marks.

  • Bezel: The choice of an acrylic bezel, while adding a vintage charm, might not be everyone's cup of tea. It does tend to pick up scratches, which could be a downside for some.

Performance and Functionality

  • Movement: The Japanese Meca-Quartz movement is reliable, but I was left wondering why Spinnaker didn't provide more information about it. The accuracy and potential for repairs are details I believe are crucial for an informed decision.

  • Dial and Readability: Despite its busy dial, Spinnaker has done a commendable job in keeping it legible and balanced. The textured finish adds depth, making it visually appealing.

Wearability and Comfort

  • On the Wrist: This watch is on the heavier side, especially with the bracelet. It's something to consider if you prefer lighter watches. The size, 43mm in diameter, is something I found quite substantial for a wrist presence.

  • Water Resistance: With 150 meters of water resistance, it's more than capable for most water-related activities. But, do we really need that level of resistance in everyday life?

Value Proposition: Price vs. Quality

  • Pricing: At £250 on the bracelet and £210 on the strap, it raises a question about value for money. The concerns about the steel used and the extra weight make the strap version a more attractive proposition in my eyes.

Final Verdict: A Mixed Bag?

The Spinnaker Fleuss Chronograph is a watch that I went back and forth on. There are elements I really like - the dial colour, layout, and case design. But there are aspects that didn't quite hit the mark for me, notably the acrylic bezel insert and the weight.

Would I recommend it? For those who appreciate a robust and stylistically unique diver's watch and don't mind the heft, it could be a great addition to your collection. However, for those who are detail-oriented and prefer a lighter watch, you might want to explore other options.
